Staying Safe from Loose Dogs While Walking Your Dog on a Leash

Updated: Aug 9, 2023

Taking your dog out for a walk is a great way to exercise, but it can also be hazardous if you encounter a loose dog. Here are some helpful hints to keep you and your dog safe:

  • Always keep your dog on a leash. This is the most effective way to safeguard your dog and yourself. A loose dog is unpredictable and could attack you or your dog at any time.

  • Be aware of your surroundings. Stay vigilant and look out for loose dogs when walking your dog. If you notice one, cross the road or turn around and walk the other way.

  • Avoid running away. Running away from a loose dog is not the best course of action. It will only trigger the dog's prey drive and make it more likely to attack. Instead, stay put and make yourself look as big as possible.

  • Shout loudly and wave your arms. This will startle the dog and make it more likely to back off.

  • Pick up your dog and hold it close to you if the dog continues to approach. If you don't have a dog with you, try to find something to use as a barrier between you and the dog, such as a trash can or a car.

  • If the dog attacks, fight back. Use anything you have available to defend yourself, such as a stick, a rock, or even your purse. If you have pepper spray, use it.

Remember that loose dogs are not always aggressive. Nonetheless, it's always better to be safe than sorry. By following these guidelines, you can help to ensure that you and your dog have a safe and enjoyable walk.

Additional Tips

  • Consider carrying a personal alarm or whistle if you are walking in an area with a lot of loose dogs. This will help to draw attention and scare off any aggressive dogs.

  • Check the rules and regulations if you are walking your dog in a park or other public space. Some parks require all dogs to be on a leash at all times.

  • If you encounter an aggressive or stray loose dog, contact your local animal control agency. They will be able to take the necessary measures to capture and care for the dog.

Remember, prevention is key to staying secure. Try to avoid walking your dog in areas where loose dogs are known to be, and always keep your dog on a leash. Following these guidelines will help ensure a safe and enjoyable walking experience for you and your furry friend.
